In recent weeks, the Border Guard detained 45 people who participated in and assisted in illegal border crossing or organized this transfer – according to the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, Mariusz Kamiński.

The Border Guard has recently been carrying out intensive activities to protect the Polish-Belarusian section of the state border. Additional officers of the Border Guard and a thousand soldiers of the Polish Army were assigned to carry out the tasks.

Attempts to cross illegally relate mainly to the border section protected by the Podlasie Border Guard Unit. The total length of the Polish border with Belarus is 418 km. It is protected by 19 Border Guard outlets (12 in Podlasie OSG and 7 in Nadbużański OSG). The 187 km long section is the most exposed to illegal border crossing. Additional officers from other departments of the Border Guard and a thousand soldiers of the Polish Army were assigned to operate in this section. To protect the border, the Border Guard uses technical observation devices, thanks to which it can immediately react to attempts to illegally cross the border.

In TVP Info, Mariusz Kamiński stressed that “we cannot speak of illegal immigrants on the Polish-Belarusian border as Afghan refugees in Belarus”. As he pointed out, “we have a whole range of representatives of states and nations from the Middle East there.” Kaminski also explained that a very large group are Iraqis who fly from Baghdad to Minsk.

“They pay a lot of money for it. According to the information provided by of our intelligence services and the Border Guard, which question the detained migrants, the cost is from 6 to 12 thousand dollars. Including an air ticket, a hotel in Minsk and a guide to the border – often a Belarusian officer or soldier. We are dealing here with a classic provocation. It is retaliation, a political revenge for Lukashenka for our support for democracy in Belarus and the Belarusian opposition.”

Additionally, Kaminski stated in an interview:

“These refugees are Lukashenka’s political weapon. They have been cynically used, and at the same time they are relatively wealthy people who invest quite a lot of money, considering the realities of the Middle East, in improving their situation in the West.”

In Kamiński’s opinion, these people were artificially hoped that they would easily move to the territory of the European Union, where they would improve their material status:

“They take advantage of it. These are trips organized by Belarusian and Russian travel agencies that operate in Iraq, Baghdad, for example.”
